last game, next game

The result yesterday, we all agree, was horrific. However, we can take a lot of positives from the experience. We played the ball on the ground, did not resort to long ball, and despite being down to ten men, dominated with pressure in the second half. A lot of good work out there. I will appeal the red card against Chris, though I'm not optimistic about this league's ability to reason. Some others will miss the next week and/or two weeks. Please send your status asap.Let's get together Wednesday, 6.30, at Fiala. Please respond if you can make it so we are sure of numbers.Next game is Sunday the 16th at 1:00 at CD East against Londonderry. We'll wear the new shirts. Here are the final numbers on the fees: $50 for the shirt, $50 for the rest.I'll see you all Wednesday and/or Sunday,Jeff

Roster for Sunday

Our first game is Sunday, September 9, 4pm at Fiala. Right now we're looking a bit thin. Like Supermodel thin. Here's who I believed is confirmed for the game:
1.Sam
2.Mounir
3.Dilwyn
4.Nick
5.Chris D
6.Marat
7.Jeff
8.Matthew
9.Sean
10.Kurt
And no goalie.

Possibly attending are:
11. Mark Bryan (yes a return of the non-stop engine perhaps)

Definitely out are:
12. Jim
13. Mike
14. James

Haven't heard from, so I'll assume out until we hear otherwise:
15. Steve
16. Gary

According to the website, the following have not registered: Matthew, Steve, Gary, Marat.

For those coming, bring at least the $50 for the jerseys. We won't get to wear these jersey's Sunday as Camp Hill wears white. Bring your old red shirts. I'll calculate the remaining fees once we see how many sign up.

Also, we still don't have a dedicated keeper. If anyone is willing to step up for Sunday, let me know. Otherwise it's the last one who shows up.The forecast is for thunderstorms Sunday. Stay tuned.Take care and I'll see you Sunday.

Wednesday

All - Wednesday is a go - see you there around 6.30, earlier if possible. I haven't heard anything about a field or time change for this upcoming Sunday, but stay tuned. The keeper I was working on has still yet to commit - any ideas? Does anyone know George Book well enough to talk him into coming out?
See you tomorrow,
Jeff

Update

All - just a couple of things. The league schedule isn't up yet, but as far as I know, our first game will be Sunday, September 9. I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything for certain.Only Kurt has registered so far. Please remember to do so by the end of next week. This Monday marks the last Monday kickaround (the following Monday is Labor Day, the next week is in-season). If you can, please try to make it at 6.45/7 (due to earlier darkness) at CD East. Should we try to set something up for next Wednesday at Fiala? We need at least 10 guys to show. Respond if you're up for it (and for Monday as well). The first batch of jerseys arrived this week. The rest are scheduled to arrive Monday, so I will bring them then. Cost is $50, and let me tell you, it's worth it. They're beautiful and I think you'll hang on to them for a long time.Have a good weekend, and I hope to see you Monday and Wednesday.jc

It's a Wash

Well, fellas, the rain seems poised to continue. I say call it a washout this week - even if the rain lets up, the odds of enough people showing are slim. See you Wednesday,

more thanks, this week's practice, registration

All,
Once again, another thank-you is in order. Please express your gratitude to Chris Dawson when you see him as he has secured CD East as our home field for this season. That took a lot of time and effort.
Also, as far as I can tell, we will still have a kickaround tonight (7pm, CD East) barring any heavy rain. What does everyone think about that?
Finally, we can now register for the fall and spring seasons on the league website. Please do so by the end of next week, if possible.
Thanks, see you tonight and Wednesday,
jc

15 August 2007

Say Thanks

the next time you see Matthew. He volunteered to go to the meeting tomorrow night and represent us, in the sense of rep-re-sent.
Guess it helped to promise strippers and free beer.

13 August 2007

Practice Tonight, Field, Meeting

7pm, CD East. Last week was great. Bring anyone you can.

Right now it looks like CD East is going to be the home field again this season. Let's play on that bottom field as much as we can and see if there is any possible way to get used to it.

No one has said they can make it to the meeting Thursday night. I will see if the league will exempt us from its attendance requirement this time around. I'll let you know...

05 August 2007

Practice Monday

Let's do it - Monday, 7pm, CD East. Bring anyone you can. See you then,

jerseys et al

1. Ordered the jerseys last night. They will arrive at roughly the beginning of August. The picture illustrates a suggested uniform. I'll let you know what the cost is once I divide up shipping, customization, etc.

2. Chris D has been searching dilligently for a new field. Right now our only offer is at Gelder Park in Hummelstown. This field, which I know well, is pretty much crap, is unlined, but is huge. I would like a second opinion before turning this down. If we do turn it down, we might very well be 'homeless' this fall. Any problems with that?

3. I guess we should start up the Monday night pickup. Anyone up for starting next week?

16 July 2007

pick a jersey

Ok, apparently I have to order these soon so we have them ready for the fall.

Below are some options from soccer.com. To get a ballpark figure for the price, click the "quanity pricing" link. We get the goal club price, which is 10% off. Also remember that adding numbers and a logo adds about $10-15 bucks to the price of the shirt. Since there are no sponsors yet, we will each have to pay for our shirt. I'd say we should get a few extras for future members.

So here we go. Let me know your vote for style and color (and that's a pseudo-democratic vote, by the way). The important thing in my opinion is to get something in a moisture-wicking fabric that will hold up for a couple of years of indoor and outdoor seasons. We don't have to order from here - if Angelos has something, that would be fine, and if anyone knows anywhere else, that would be good. An old team of mine once ordered kits from Ireland - really nice and not expensive, believe it or not.

10 July 2007

was there much of a turnout last night? i caught tied up with my kids & couldn't make it.

i just found out pick-up at in the net won't start until september (the manager will let me know when they start - she's expecting to post it in august & she's considering having pick-up next summer since there have been alot of people calling) / they don't do any men's tournaments - only kids / & the cost to rent their outdoor field is $75/hr in the spring & $100/hr in the fall (so unless everyone wants to chip in towards $750 in field costs in the spring & $1,000 in the fall in the net is not a good option - the indoor field is $360/hr!!!)

i'm going to try & make it to hershey's pick-up tomorrow evening.

End of Season / Summer / Next Season

All,

Thank you all for a fun season. We started well, and although our results fizzled a bit, we certainly played better over the last three games. That's something to build on for the fall.

Summer pickup - I propose starting next Monday, July 9, at 7pm at CD East, then Wednesday, 7pm at Fiala in Camp Hill. The only way these pickup games are going to work is if we have at least 6 guys every time. We need to post here or send out an e-mail each week. I'll copy this post to an e-mail and see what response we get. These are great ways to get touches and keep your fitness up over the next two months. Plus you get to abuse Gary and Nick by slide-tackling them as often as possible. The league also sent out an e-mail reminding us that there are also pickup games Sundays at Linglestown Jr. High between 4 and 6. Those of you who've been there know what that's about, others, well, go and find out for yourself, if you dare. Also, there are still games Wednesdays at 6.30 at the Hershey Med Center.
Let me begin the response by saying that I'm 50/50 for Monday and out most Wednesdays (I'm going to stick with the Hershey game as the numbers are pretty much guaranteed, unlike our 2v2 Wednesdays that happened quite often in the past).

Fall - the season starts Sunday, September 9. We need to accomplish three things: 3 new players, a new home field, and new jerseys (too many guys in t-shirts).
I may have a keeper for us. Nick has at least 2 leads. Anyone else?
Anyone have a suggestion for a home field? Preferably something with grass or field turf that isn't as demoralizing as CD East.
I will order jerseys the beginning of August. This time I'm not going to go bargain basement hunting, so we'll be able to get the sizes we need (you're welcome, Chris Dawson). That said, it will cost a bit more than last time, but hopefully we'll get something that will last for 2 years. If you can't commit for 2 years, no problem - the team will buy the jersey back from you. Do we still want red? We had to use a different color for 40% of our games, so maybe we want something we can wear every time out, like black.

This leads to the next issue - are you in for the fall? Please let me know by the beginning of August. Also let me know your jersey size and the number you want. I will post 'claimed' numbers as I receive the requests. I hope all of you will continue on with us.

Thanks, and have a great summer. See you out there for pickup.

Last Game and Last Game

All,

The game on Sunday was our best effort of the year. The result sucked, but such is the game. It's great to see how we've improved over the season and are definitely a better team than we were during the first week.
This Sunday we have one final chance to put it together before the summer break. 3pm, CD East. See you there.

article

it's been a slow day - here's an article about the US soccer teams' "uniform crisis"

http://www.slate.com/id/2168476/fr/rss/

Yesterday's Game, Next Game, Pickup

1. To everyone who played yesterday, great job coming back from 3-0 down. They scored good goals, so we can't take anything away from them. However, we fought hard in that second half. Five more minutes and we would have had them for sure. For those who weren't there, it was a 3-2 loss. I haven't heard from Marat, but he needed at least 10 stitches I would guess (being rather experienced in that field). Again, and this was echoed by EVERYONE, we are unstoppable when we play the short game. We picked those guys apart once we played the easy ball on the ground.
2. Our next game is Sunday, 1pm, against Lower Dauphin: NOTE - FIELD CHANGE: GAME IS AT KELLER FIELD. CHECK WEBSITE FOR DIRECTIONS. This will be a tough game, but a fun one, so let's get our positive energy up and ready for it. Let us know if you will not be there.
3. With only a couple of votes, the trend for summer pickup is to retain our schedule from last year - Mondays at 7 at CD East, Wednesdays at 7 at Fiala in Camp Hill. Any other suggestions?

13 June 2007

Nick's new nickname is "triple espresso."

Rescheduled Game

All,

Just received word that the rained-out game against Lower Dauphin has been rescheduled for July 1 (same time and location). Let me know ASAP if you would be available on this date. I can't make that date, and I'm sure there are at least one or two more. If enough people can't make it, we could possibly reschedule again - Lower Dauphin might have similar issues. Let me know.

Apologies, Next Game, Summer Pickup

I greatly apologize for yesterday's debacle. I'm especially sorry to Gary and Kurt, who showed up for the game, but at different times and different locations. Both of you get a refund for this past week.
Here's what happened: we showed up at Redland High School for our 1:00 game. A youth game was taking place on the only available field. The Redland captain explained that we just got booted because of a scheduling conflict with the kids. The Redland team had no prior knowledge and neither did the refs or the league. So a couple of guys on the Redland team went to the Redland soccer club to see if there was an available field. At around 1:00, they returned, said the field was available, and we headed out in a caravan to the field. I tried calling Gary, but had an old, inactive number. Tim tried Kurt, but had to leave a message at his (Tim's) house for his wife to call Kurt. Tim also volunteered to hang around a bit to see if anyone else showed. No one did, so he came to the Redland complex. Meanwhile, I found out later, Gary had headed to Redland high school, didn't see anybody, so returned to his house to double-check the schedule, then ended up back at Redland high. He called my wife, who only had the info that the game was at the high school. Meanwhile, back at Redland soccer club, we started the game at around 1.40, played 2 30-minute halves, and ended at around 2.45, winning 1-0 thanks to a great goal by James. Again, sorry for not being prepared with current numbers. Sorry to Gary for having to endure that BS.
Our next game is Sunday the 17th at 1:00, at CD East, against Londonderry. Nick and Mike will not be there. Anyone else? Last time we played them, they outhustled us, and that's the only way they beat us. Not this time, right? Let's be ready to play harder, faster and more physically than they do.
Now is the time to start thinking about a day and time for summer pickup. Last summer we played Mondays at CD East and Wednesdays in Camp Hill. Attendance was generally pretty good, and obviously picked up in August. I'd like to propose having one game on either Saturday or Sunday and trying to get everyone out for that. Any votes for a day, time and location?

next game

good work in the second half on Sunday. how does our game keep turning out so ugly? we need more aggressiveness, more ball winning and quicker passes. believe me, i'm looking in the mirror on this one.
our next game is against Redland, Sunday at 1 at Redland high school. Directions are on the website. Do we wear red or blue against them? I don't remember. Bring both unless someone lets us know.
pickup tonight at Hershey Med, 630.

Next Game

Sunday, June 3, 3pm, CD East against Hellenic. Remember, they gave us trouble even though we ended up winning comfortably.

Let everyone know your status by commenting here or by sending out a blast e-mail.

Reminder that there is pickup tomorrow night at Hershey Med Center.

Anyone want to play over the weekend?

Sunday or Monday? Time and place? Anyone?

21 May 2007

Yesterday's Game

Before this day gets any nuttier, I just wanted to let everyone know I thought we did a great job yesterday securing the win. We started very strong in the first half and may have played our best half of the season. What made it work? We played the ball on the ground, we switched the field and used the width, through-balls were on the ground, we won the second ball. In the second half I thought we succumbed to our long ball habit a bit too often, but still had great chances. Our defense did a tremendous job - three at the back is tough, but you guys read the game and our opponents perfectly. Any win when you only have 10 is a good win. Again, great work.
There is pickup this Wednesday, as you all know, at Hershey Med, 615pm or so.
There is no game this upcoming Sunday because of the holiday. Is anyone interested in kicking the ball over the weekend, Sunday or Monday? Please post here or start an e-mail.
Take it easy,
jc

Next Game, etc

1. Next Game: Sunday, May 20, 1pm, at CD East. We play Camp Hill (again). If you can't make it, please let everyone know ASAP.

2. Fees: You must pay this week. That's it. If you don't pay, you don't play. It's not fair to those who fork over the cash. You know who you are.

3. Again, pickup tonight at the Hershey Med Center, 6.30pm.

Tactics 3

The other day I came across a document I'd printed out a few years ago on the fundamentals of soccer tactics, broken down by positions and offensive/defensive responsibilities. I thought it might be useful for each of us to take a look at them. I'm going to break these into three posts: defenders, midfielders, forwards, but we should read all of them - you never know when you'll end up in a strange position AND we need to function better as a collective unit. So here goes:

Forwards as a group

Defensive
§ Transition to defending (psychological aspects)
§ Integral part of collective team defense
§ Make play predictable, steer opponents according to defensive philosophy
§ Playing low pressure
§ Playing high pressure
Offensive
§ Know when to hold ball and when to lay off
§ Ability to beat opponents; dribble and combination play
§ Ability to create space for self and teammates; mobility
§ Finishing; with all surfaces, from all areas and angles
§ Proper attacking runs in the box, timing
§ Ability to play together, shape

Central forwards
§ Compact the central covering system; push up to the sweeper, stretch the opponents in depth, position of stopper will dictate forwards’ play
§ Pull apart the central covering system
o Diagonal runs into spaces on flank
o Withdraw to meet midfielder
o Show for combination play with wingers
o Bending runs away to create space for winger
o Constant attempts to get behind defender
§ Finishing

§ Establish width in the attack
§ Create space for teammates
§ Ability to penetrate with dribble and combination play

07 May 2007

As to yesterday's game, that pretty much sucked harder and longer than a crazed hippy with a breast fetish at a grateful dead show. I thought we would get them in the second half, especially after we started it so well, but we reverted to long ball again and that did us in as it will every time. It also helped that we gave them too much time on the ball. Once we actually put the ball on the ground, we created some chances, alas, to no avail. But let's forget and move on to the next game, which is in two weeks time, and without checking the schedule I believe it is against Camp Hill.
As always, Wednesday pickup in Hershey, 6 0r so, at the med center.
Later I will publish the list of those players who have not paid yet. Because I have been screwed before, and as Jim, who ran indoor this year will attest, this is not fair to those who have paid. I'm hopeful that public humilation will get you to pay. However, if you do not pay by or at the next game, you will not be able to play until you do.

pick-up

made it to pick-up at hershey med shortly after 7 last night & played in a 9v9 game for about a half an hour - beautiful night, too bad no one else showed. see everyone sunday.

Game on 5/6/07 and summary

We play Londonderry on Sunday May 6th AWAY (Harrisburg Christian School - see league website for directions) with kick-off at 3pm. Please show up at 2:30 to warm-up. Londonderry is tied with us, having a record of 3-0 (10 for/5 against) - beat Lower Dauphin 1-0, beat Camp Hill 5-3 and beat Hellenic 4-2.

Present status for Sunday (5/6)
YES (12): Jeff, Jim, Marat, Hector, Tim, Chris, Mike, Alex, Matthew, Gary, Dilwyn, James
NO (3):Nick, Steve, Kurt
??? (3): George, Sean, Buddy
*Please post to the blog if your status changes for Sundays match.

MATCH SUMMARY: (vs. Redland)
We won the match 3-2 with goals from Jim 2 and an own goal - that I believe we said we'd give to Dilwyn. In what is becoming our anthem for the season, we had moments of cohesive play, but on the whole didn't play as well as we could have - this goes for everyone. We need to utilize our wings more, as with Hellenic, our wings were wide open most of the time but we only seemed to use periodically. This was another one of those annoying matches were our touch was off often, however, the two goals we did score were gorgeous......goal one was a run up the wing by me, a sharp cross to the penalty spot, a step over by Marat for Jim to drive into the the lower corner. The second goal was essentially a solo effort by Jim, who almost ripped a hole in the back of the net. The only other observation is an obvious one, we made plenty of opportunities but were putting them wide. If we put in even half of our attempts, the score would have easily been 7-2.

NEXT WEEK:
Next week's opponent now gets elevated to the status of toughest match of the season thus far, looking to hold their undefeated record. If you recall, this team has a few decent players (the bald defensive guy for one), but otherwise bring nothing special to the pitch. New guys, make sure you either get directions to this field from the league website or call Jeff.

PICK-UP:
Don't forget, pick-up footie in front of Hershey Medical Center at 6pm on Wednesdays.

24 April 2007

Game on 4/29/07 and summary

We play Redland on Sunday April 29th at HOME (CD East) with kick-off at 3pm. Please show up at 2:30 to warm-up. Redland is 1-1 having beaten Hellenic 9-1 and losing to Lower Dauphin 1-2.

Present status for Sunday (4/29)
YES (14): Jim, Marat, Hector, Nick, Tim, Kurt, Chris, Mike, Alex, Matthew, Gary, George, Dilwyn, James
NO (3):Jeff, Steve, Sean
??? (0):
*Please post to the blog is your status changes for Sundays match.

MATCH SUMMARY: (vs. Hellenic)
We won the match 6-1 with goals from Jim 1, Tim 1, Hector 1, Jeff 1 and Steve 2. We had moments of cohesive play, but for the most part (and everyone agreed at the end of the match) that we didn't play well. Saying that, we pulled out a victory. I understand that the pitch didn't help, however, we have to learn to adapt our play based upon a) the conditions and b) the opponent. There were moments of players talking to each other, intricate passing (few) and movement on and off the ball (fewer). They had a few handy players (including a Greek orthodox priest!) but otherwise didn't bring much to the pitch.

NEXT WEEK:
Next week's opponent will be the toughest match of the season thus far, having defeated us at the end of last season 2-1. If you recall, they celebrated like they had won the world cup when they defeated us, so lets take it to them. From what I recall, they have 1 handy midfielder and a quick striker.

PICK-UP:
Don't forget, pick-up footie in front of Hershey Medical Center at 6pm on Wednesdays. Jeff and I went last week and it was about 10 v. 10. Jeff and I will try to be there this week.

19 April 2007

Next Game

All, we play this Sunday, 5pm, at CD East. Please be there at around 4.30 and bring your $$$ if you have not done so already. A few of you have told me you won't be there this week and I appreciate the advance notice. The weather should be beautiful on Sunday, so let's play hard and focused and put the opposition away early.
See you Sunday.

ps - the pickup game at Hershey Med was quite nice, and in lieu of setting up practices which no one can attend, I'm going to posit this game as our midweek venture.

17 April 2007

PRACTICE CANCELLED

Due to a lack of turnout, practice for tomorrow is cancelled. For those of you still interested in playing, there is a pickup game (or has been in the past) at the Hershey Med Center field starting at around 6pm. Generally there is a good turnout and the play is decent at times. To get there, get on 322 in Hershey - you can't miss it: right in front of the med center and across from the Hershey Lodge. Hope to see some of you there,

16 April 2007

Wednesday Practice

6.30pm, CD East, on the field between the middle school and high school. Same place we kicked around last summer. If you know anyone not on the team who wants to come, that would be great. See you then.
Any questions, e-mail me at : cothren@verizon.net

15 April 2007

Game Cancelled

In case you didn't get the message and happen to check here for news, which you should anyway, the game for today has been canceled. I'm told the field is underwater. Anyone up for Wednesday?

09 April 2007

Game 2

All - our next game is this upcoming Sunday, April 15, at 3pm, at CD East. We play Lower Dauphin, who handled us well last season. Let's not allow for any repeats of those fiascos. Please let everyone know if you cannot make it - otherwise we'll assume your happy faces will be there half an hour prior to kickoff. If you did not pay, please bring your $$$ this week.
Any thoughts on a good day and time for a mid-week practice?
Have a good week and I'll see you on Sunday.

Game 1

All,

Really, really great work yesterday. Good movement off the ball, good use of limited space with that tiny field, attacks from the outside backs, well-worked substitutions. Absolutely tremendous defense. Hope everyone went home feeling good because you deserved it.
Now, we do not have a game this coming Sunday. How about getting together for a kickaround either Saturday or Sunday? I have been asked to use CD East (home field) for these sessions. What day will work? If I say Saturday at 3, can we get at least 6 guys out there?
Also, can we consider, now that the daylight is lasting longer and longer, holding a regular midweek session, say on Wednesday evenings? Give it some thought.
Take it easy,
jc

Roster + Game 1

All,

The first game of the outdoor season is Sunday, 3pm, against Camp Hill at Fiala in Camp Hill. Please arrive at 2.30 so we can get things sorted out and warm up before kickoff. If you are not going to be there, please let the team know as soon as possible.
Here is our updated roster. Aside from the injured players, we have a maximum of 14 for each game. I'd say we need two more players - did I miss anybody who was going to sign up?
In any case, if someone (say, Jim, maybe) could send this by e-mail again, that would be great.
See you Sunday. Wear red shirts. Bring your money. Oh, and bring your money.

1. Tim Bentz
2. Marat Bogdanov
3. George Book
4. Hector Bueno
5. Jeff Cothren
6. Chris Dawson
7. Robert "Buddy" Hart
8. Dilwyn Knott
9. Sam Kpakiwa - injured
10. Mike Labe
11. Jim Leslie
12. Jeff Schmidt - injured
13. Nick Stapp
14. Gary Suchy
15. Kurt Twiford
16. Jim Zasadni

22 March 2007

Update

1. Could someone, or all of you, please send this post around via e-mail, especially to our new players. I won't have access to my e-mail list (which is on my home computer) for a couple of days yet - meaning that it will be a while until I am at my computer and actually remember to send the e-mail.
2. First game is Sunday, April 1, 3pm, at Fiala field in Camp Hill against, oddly enough, Camp Hill. Please let everyone know if you'll be there or not.
3. I'd like us to kick around before the game, but that may not be possible on such short notice. Originally we weren't going to have our first game until April 15, but Tricounty dropped out of the league and the schedule was changed. Are there at least 6 of you who would play this Saturday, 4pm, at CD East?
4. Fee: $70, once again. And that's US Dollars, not Canadian, Gary.
Ok, if nothing else, I'll see you Sunday, April 1.

Spring Season, part 1

Ok, Bitches, and Gary,
Since there were no takers on my offer to manage the team this Spring, I'll do it again. Dammit.
Meeting is this Monday night where I'm sure I'll receive all kinds of informative tips. Of course I'll gladly pass them on to you.
I will assume that those of you who offered to help out on an as-needed basis will be available for certain tasks. Beer retrieval is top of the list.
Anyway, stay tuned for more info.
We really need some solid players, so if you can put the word out, please do. I'll see about an online presence.
Later,

Questions and Pleas for Outdoor

All,

First of all, the Spring outdoor season will be upon us shortly. The organizational meeting is to take place in just over two weeks and the first weekend of April hosts the season opener.
Second, are you planning to play on ES this Spring? We have only lost one player from the fall as far as I know, though we can always use a few good players. Know any?
Third, can someone please, please take over running the team for a while? I've done four seasons, and am maxed out.
Please let me know the answers to all of these questions by Feb. 16 so I can get an idea of what's happening for the Spring.

Thanks,

24 January 2007

I know it's early, but....

Outdoor does start in a couple of months, and I want to put the bug in everyone's ear as far as deciding whether or not you plan to play this Spring and to assist all of us in finding a couple of new players. Don't rush into any decisions just yet. We've got some time. It would be nice to start kicking around before the start of the season, which right now is scheduled for the first Sunday in April. We've lost Mark N, but should have Chris Dawson back. Any thoughts from anyone? Just let me know.
Oh, and Jim Leslie wanted me to plug his new tax preparation service. Refund GUARANTEED.

Sports City Tie Breaker Rule

Great work last night gentlemen! You all helped smother/block many shots to make my job a lot easier. Thank you! However, we still got our player assignments mixed up a few times, but it worked out ok.

Before we worry about tie breaker rules against National FC, we need to first concentrate on (#1) winning games and (#2) having few goals scored against us. For an explanation of why see below. Thanks again for your hard work yesterday.

9A.3 Tie-breaker Rules (These tie-breaker rules are not used to determine the winner of a tournament semi-final or championship game.)
In the event two or more teams have accumulated the same number of points in a tournament or league, the tie will be broken according to the following provisions, and in this order:

A.) Head to head competition-The result of the game(s) between the teams tied. (In the event of a tie between three or more teams, this tie-breaker will be skipped and the next tie-breaker(s) considered sequentially. Once one team is determined to have the best record of the teams tied, then that team will advance. The remaining teams will then begin the tie-breaker process anew starting with A. and proceed until one of the teams is found to have the better record. Then, that team, along with the first team to advance, will begin the tie-breaker process again starting with A.)

B.) Fewest points allowed in all games.

C.) Most shutouts recorded in all games.

D.) Total points scored in all games (however, a maximum of 3 points will be awarded per game).

E.) Coin toss or such other tie-breaker as both coaches and Sports City agree to.

Mourinho is a #%$&@$%^

A draw against a higher seeded team, on the road yet, and Mourinho has the nerve to criticize Arsenal for being happy with the result. He is such an idiot!

Tonight's Indoor Match

Well, I think we learn more from games like this than those in which we dominate without much effort. I want to apologize for being responsible for three goals. I was the dictionary illustration of not following my man.
A few comments heard afterwards:

-- we didn't follow the runners
-- we need to play man to man vs zone defense
-- when we marked them, they didn't have anything
-- we need to keep our heads up and slow down in attack
-- we rushed when we fell behind

All worth thinking about. However, keep in mind that we were in the game all the way to the end and it could have easily gone the other way. We frustrated them as well. Good for us.
Nick, I thought you had a great game winning tackles all over the place. All our goals were the result of that kind of hustle. So, it's not all negative. Let's have a blast next week.
Anyone for kicking around outside one weekend day?

European Matches live to watch online!!!

http://www.myp2p.eu/index.htm - click on "football" on the left and then if you want to watch a weekday or weekend match.

Many links from around the world will appear, I've had luck by just selecting the "live" windows media feed. Often times, it will say that it can't connect, this is because of traffic, keep hitting play until you get through. The quality is very good as long as you internet connection is good.

Happy watching and good luck getting work done!

Good Finish

Guys, despite the result and that lucky shot - my bad for letting him shoot, I thought he was going to cross and we'd handle it easily - we played very well. Really, the improvement from the beginning of the season showed itself today. Congratulations for playing so hard and putting it all out there today.
As for next season, we can always use good players, so if you know anyone, let everyone know. I know that some of you may be moving on to greener pastures, and I hope that if this is your intention, you'll let us know that as well.
I think next Spring we will be very competitive and can make a run to move up to division 1. Let's keep working and get it done.
How about a night for beer sometime before the end of the year?
In any case, it's been a good season and let's get excited for the spring.

16 November 2006

Last Game of the Season

Sunday, 1pm, CD East. Lower Dauphin, who spanked us last time out. I don't like being spanked. At least not like that.
Bring your a-game.

There is pick up indoor at Twin Ponds from 7-9 this evening, for those that are interested. Cost is $5-.
I plan on attending, but my daughter has conjunctivitis and I may have to make up for missing some work. I'll post my status later.
Please post your status - it would be good to get a few guys out there and work on some short passing...

-------------

*someone has to lose 2 goals, we're only 22 goals for/12 goals against

-So what does this analysis tell us?

1) Jim is a goal scoring machine (with Jim skewing the data--in a good way!)
2) We've averaged 2.75 goals in 7 games (with the match against Hellanic skewing the data)
3) Fwds: 9/22 goals
4) Mids (center): 6/22 goals
5) Mids (wings): 6/22 goals (perhaps -1 here?)
6) Def (center): 3/22 goals (perhaps -1 here?)
7) There have been a total of 270 goals scored in D1 and D2, averaging at 18 goals per team, that's 2.57 goals per game in 7 games. So as pathetic as it is, we are above average.
8) Division One's average is 19.12 goals per team (with angelos 28 goals and annville 32 skewing the data).
9) Division Two's average is a pathetic 16.71 goals per team (with ES???? leading the pack on goals scored).
10) We've allowed 12 goals to be scored against us, with 2 clean sheets (against camp hill and hellanic). That's 1.71 goals allowed per match.
11) Games we've won by 1 goal=3/7
12) Games we've lost by 1 goal=1/7
13) Games we've won by more than 1 goal=2/7
14) Games won away 3/7 - Games lost away 1/7
15) Games won home 2/7 - Games lost at home 1/7

So, statistically, what does this tell us? That perhaps we should consider switching our formation (especially with only 3 matches left) to (ala Arsenal yesterday) a 4-5-1 (with one midfielder supporting Jim or Henry if you like)) or a 3-5-2, offering offensively minded and defensively minded midfield play. A majority of our efforts (almost 50% are coming from the midfield-as they should be)--an even distribution of goals are coming from the wings (5) and from the center of the pitch (6).

Of course, none of these statistics are valid if we don't play hard, want to win and work together as a team.

I'm doing all of this because I'm supposed to be studying for my doctoral exams--I get easily distracted :)

31 October 2006

Two quick things

Stats: Who has scored for ES this year? we have 22 for and 12 against, with jeff and the defense recording two clean sheets.

Twin Ponds tonight: I suspect those of you who said that they would play tonight forgot that it was Halloween....anyone showing anyway? I might, but I don't have children.

Last Game, Pickup, Next Game

Way to come back and get the win yesterday. I felt we took it to them except for the beginning of the second half. Then the intensity returned. Good chances, good finishing, good defending.

Pickup tomorrow night is between 7-9 at Twin Ponds.

Next game is Sunday at 1, CD East (I think) against Londonderry. Bring your blue shirts.

Again, good work, see you next week.

Twin Ponds Pick-up

Hi Everyone-

For those of you who a) read the blog and b) think that they need additional time to work on fitness, skills, shooting and miss weekly practice.

Twin Ponds has open pick-up every Tuesday from 7-9pm. The skill level varies but is generally decent, with players ranging in age from 17-60.

I won't be there this Tuesday (10/24) but otherwise plan to attend whenever I can.

Directions to Twin Ponds: http://ezleagues.ezfacility.com/contact_us.aspx?facility_id=15

Nonetheless...

Despite the result, we played some of our best soccer this year during that game. A couple of finishes, and we would have been fine.
Look inside yourself, see what you can improve, see what we as a team can do better. Other than the obvious - finishing.
Let's get ready for the physical game next Sunday against Camp Hill.
There is pickup indoor at Twin Ponds on Tuesday - Nick, can you post the times?
Rest up and I'll see you Sunday if not before,
jc

Upcoming Games

All,

Solid work this past weekend - let's not get carried away, however. There was some talk, and I agree with it, that we were still too vertical in our attack. We used the width very well, I thought, but didn't really switch the point of attack. This upcoming game, Sunday, 1pm at CDEast against Redland, let's work on that. We don't have to go directly to goal. Review Argentina's 24-pass goal against Serbia from this past world cup (got to be somewhere online).
Other games coming up are: Camp Hill, Sunday, Oct.29, 1pm at Fiala, Londonderry, November 5, 1pm at CD East. Those will be tough, so let's get ready for them by playing hard this week.
Again, a nice win - we needed the result - but let's focus on lateral movement and, for Camp Hill and Lower Dauphin (last game of the season), physical play.

07 October 2006

Indoor

All, with the arrival of October, the rapidly shrinking daylight and falling temperatures, thoughts shift to the upcoming indoor season.
I'd like to ask if anyone would like to manage the indoor sessions this year. It would be a big help. We've been managing by committee, which works great, but I need a bit of a break from my current role.
Any takers?

06 October 2006

Practice?

Are we having practice on Sunday? What is a good time for everyone to make it?

Forget that Fucking Fiasco

Pardon my fucking French.
That sucked. For those not in attendance, and you were many, that was a 3-0 loss. That's right, a serious ass-whooping.
First, I'd like to apologize for playing like shit, not having any energy or fight. Don't know why, but I should perform better and will in the future.
Second, let's be schizophrenic here - forget this loss until we face them again. To move up to first division, we must beat them. So remember how shitty it feels to lose to them. All twenty of them. No excuses, though. We had more skill, but less fight. We did try, and the effort was there at times. The game just didn't come together for us.
Every team has games like these, when just about every bounce of the ball goes wrong, so let's regroup and come out fighting for the next one.
Next game is in two weeks. Based on what I heard, Wednesday will be a wash. I will be out of town Wednesday through Wednesday, so I can help put things together, but won't be there. I think playing next Sunday would be a good idea.
Have a good couple of weeks and be vocal with your ideas as to how we can bounce back.
Take it easy fellas,
jc

Misc

1. For Sam - it was a 3-2 win, should have, could have been more, as usual. Great goals from Jim, Gary and Mark N. Led 2-0 at halftime, Mark's second half goal put them away before they scored two weak goals in the last 10 minutes or so.
2. Great work again yesterday. I'm pleased we held on for a win. Hopefully you all are as unsatisified with our play as I am - we could be crisper, faster. The ball bounced trickily, however. And I must point out that our defense did really well - you guys not only stopped them consistently, but made brilliant runs out of the back. That's a huge bonus.
3. I am very impressed and pleased with our turnout at the games. Everyone seems happy to come out, the subs move in and out well - great work.
4. Wednesday - let's try for 6, assuming this will get us started until 6.15 at Fiala. Any chance of finding somewhere with lights? If you can't make it, please let everyone know.
5. Next game - Sunday, 3pm, at Swatara Creek Park. This field is right on the creek, so it will likely be soft. I know Tim can't make the 3.00 start. Any others?

Have a good week and thanks for all of your hard work and commitment.

I am Your Father

Gary and Laurie are now tired and elated parents of a baby boy, born Tuesday morning. Everyone is doing well, is healthy, is pretty damn tired. He may be there tomorrow so let's heap congratulations on him.
Gary, just saying this now so it's out of the way - keep your son away from my daughters.

Game 3

Game 3 already? Damn. Time moves quickly when you age, doesn't it?

Game 3 is Sunday at 1pm at CD East. Please bring Blue and Red jerseys. I found an extra blue that I can bring.
Please forward this message to those who don't check the blog.
Right now I know Mike Labe won't be there - anyone else?

21 September 2006

Any News from Gary?

Anybody hear from Gary about the baby and Laurie?

Game 2 Report

All,

Great work yesterday. We really woke up after Jeff made that brilliant save in the opening minutes. The result was never in doubt after that. The game featured some great goals along with good interplay. Let's keep it up - next week, 1:00, CD East (home field). Bring both jerseys as I've no idea what color the other team is.
Some guys picked up knocks - Buddy, Jim, Mark N - anyone else? Take care of those.
Practice this week on Wednesday at Fiala, let's shoot for 6.15-6.20. Post replies here if you will attend.
By the way, the name of the magic energy goo Buddy graciously provided is Carb Boom (www.carbboom.com). He recommends the apple flavor as it tastes like apple pie. I don't know, but that stuff works. It's also helpful if you avoid exotic food and quantities of Newcastle Brown Ale (keyword: brown) the night before a game.
All right, take it easy and have a good week. Again, great games by everybody.

10 September 2006

Game 1 Report

Is that Marat on the ground? Typifies the afternoon. A 1-0 victory was well-deserved, although we all know we should have won by several more goals. We carved that team up from the opening kickoff. Our first half play, other than finishing, was pretty good, I thought. We lost a bit of composure and totally lost our shape during the last 15-20 minutes. Great desire to get the goal, though. We'll work out the kinks - that was our first game on a big field in a couple of months, so no worries. Thanks to Sam for the photo - get the knee healed, Sam, we need you. Those of you who saw the e-mail know that we're now down 2 players. Let's think about positive talk out there. Bitch at the other team, lift our team, capisce?

06 September 2006

Game Time / Field Change

We now play Sunday at 5:00 at Fiala instead of 1:00 at CD East.
See you there at 4:30.

05 September 2006

One More Pre-season Practice / Possible Game Change

All,
Last practice before the season starts. We will meet on Wednesday at Fiala at - may I propose 6.30pm? I know that's tough. Please respond via comments so we can see who can make it that early.

Possible Game Time/Location Change:
Right now we're working on switching the game on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 and from CD East to Fiala. The issue is that members of both teams are involved in Camp Hill youth soccer activities at 12:30. As soon as we hear from the refs, I will let everyone know.

Fees:
$70.

To those who were there last night, sorry for being annoying. No energy, sore ankles in that muck made for an asshole attack. Plus Ξανθίππη.
I did hear some good talk about not getting overconfident. That's a big key - it doesn't matter how much 'better' we are, any team can lose on any day. Let's play with confidence, creativity and an attacking spirit, but not get cocky.

27 August 2006

This Week

All - This past Thursday I visited with Chris Dawson. He just had some complications as a result of the ACL reconstruction surgery. He has a blood clot in his leg, which thankfully was caught in time, and is now laid up for a bit. He should resume PT soon, and estimates that he'll make it back at least for part of the Spring. If you get the chance, drop him a line and wish him well. Maybe he'll spot you some Percocet...

Also, based on our roster at the end of this week, I'll make the calculation as to what the team fees for the season will be. If we add players after next Sunday, we can redistribute funds as we see fit. I vote for one of those World Cup balls.

Copied from the e-mail sent out earlier:

As usual, we'll be out at CD East on Monday at 7, at Fiala on Wednesday at 7. Next week is labor day, so I assume we won't be getting together on Monday unless enough voice their opinions otherwise.
According to the schedule, our first game is against Camp Hill on Sunday, September 10, 1pm at CD East. Our second game is Sunday, September 17 at 3pm, at Harrisburg Christian School against Londonderry.
The roster stands at 14 players having registered, one being Billy who has been quite quiet this summer. Billy? Billy?
I know new Mark will register, and that is 15.
Have I forgotten anyone who has registered that you know of?
Take it easy and I'll see you this week.

20 August 2006

Registration, Pickup, etc.

So, we've only 5 more outings (assuming we bag Labor Day) to get ourselves ready for the season. I highly encourage everyone to come out as often as you can. We're going to talk about some positioning issues, etc., and make sure we're on the same page before we get into a game and have to work it out on the fly. New players - it would be preferable if you came out to at least one session before the season.
If you read Mark's comment on the recent post, you'll know that you can now register for the fall season on the league's website. Please do so as soon as possible so we can get a roster count and determine what the other fees for the season will be. Note that you will not see your name on the roster until Mark or I add it. We cannot add it until you register. On a related note, you must bring your id to every game.
Jerseys: I don't have any more of the ones we ordered for last season. I suggest that those of you who do not have a red jersey contact me and we'll see about getting you one.
Please respond to this message and let everyone know whether you'll be out at pickup this week. (for those of you who find this on the blog, I'm sending this via e-mail - let's respond via e-mail as that seems to have a better response)
Hope to see you this week,

15 August 2006

Misc

First, Mark N. is attending the league meeting tonight. Please say a big thank you to him for doing this very dirty deed. He attended last year, the season before that as well, and has also taken care of the field, both last season and this, and essentially does the dirty work. His willingness to step up and basically serve as the manager has been nothing less than outstanding. I hope you all agree he does not have to buy any beer or anything else for the next year.
Second, Mark also came up with the idea of splitting off the different jobs we have to do to make the team run. In this way, it wouldn't be necessary to have one or two people carry the load. For instance, we could use a treasurer, uniform/eqt manager, all that. And we could rotate it every season. Does anyone want to volunteer for either of those roles or do you have another role in mind?
Third, here is an interesting article and a list of some sites to check out:
http://www.biomech.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=160502547

Mark will update us with the important info from tonight's meeting.

Hope to see you on the field tomorrow night.

This Week

It's that weekly wake-up call ... who's up for pickup?

Monday, 7, CDEast
Wednesday, 7, Fiala

Let us know if you're coming. Pass this along if you know of anyone who doesn't regularly check the blog.

Perhaps we should work on some 'check to the ball' type drills before scrimmaging. But don't let this deter you from coming out.

See you,

Formations

Here's a good article on different formations. Think about which one fits our personnel, fitness level, etc. We did well with the 4-4-2 w/flat back four, but maybe something else might fit better. Something to think about.

Summer Pickup - here we go

All,

Our summer pickup schedule starts, for most of us, this Monday, 7pm, at CD East (some of you started last Wednesday, I believe). Please let anyone you think might be a fit for our team know so we can try them out at one of these sessions. See you there.

world cup soccer

i wondered if everyone else was as impressed with the italy / germany game as i was. i thought they both played well & the difference was a wonderful save by the italian keeper vs 2 late unstoppable shots by italy once everyone was tired & the field opened up. i'm looking forward to sunday's final & what i perceive as the stronger team of italy can stop the more singular brilliance of zidane. i didn't see yesterday's game but sounded like it wasn't as exciting & perhaps decided by yet another questionable call by a ref. if italy wins the u.s. can take some consolation in the fact that the would be the only team that italy played that italy didn't beat & they did that being a man down.

Pickup Schedule

All - I've talked with a few people who are confused as to when we're starting our summer pickup schedule. In an earlier post, I mentioned this Wednesday, July 5 as the starting time.
However, since some of the regulars will be absent, let's start on Monday, July 10 at 7 at CD East.
Take the week off, enjoy the World Cup semis and final, let those nagging injuries heal up, and see you in a week.

Thursday Pickup

Can we get a count of all who will be there tomorrow night? I have to bring the kids, so that may or may not work.
Remember that we start next week on Wednesday, 7pm, at Fiala in Camp Hill. Directions to Fiala from the CASL website: From 581, take the Camp Hill exit (11/15 North) to second traffic signal at Camp Hill Mall. Turn right onto Chestnut. Take a right onto 21st st. Follow 21st to the end, turn right into the cul-de-sac.
Take it easy,

Another outstanding showing and end of season notes

All,

It can't be said enough - that was great work yesterday all over the field. It's one thing to know we can beat an opponent, another to go out and settle the issue. I can't think of a better way to close the season. All hail Sensei - after playing so many games without subs, we had no problems while the other team struggled. The finishing was outstanding, the defense shined by not only giving them few chances, but by creating a few and starting a number of attacks, and our midfield ran circles around them. Great work, everyone.
As for next season, I think we start the first Sunday after labor day, but that has yet to be determined.
This Thursday we will play as usual, then start up again Wednesday the following week.
If you know are not planning to play with us next season, please let Mark or I know as soon as possible and please turn in your jersey. I hope all of you plan to remain with the team as we are really starting to get it together.
Take it easy and congratulations on a nice win,

jc

Summer Pickup

We talked last night about keeping up with our practices during the summer break, and all agreed this would be a great help. Not only are we improving with each outing, and have these sessions to thank, but we now have a good way to bring players in and see how they fit.

So, the schedule will be:

Monday nights, 7pm, CD East
Wednesday nights, 7pm, Fiala (Camp Hill)

I propose starting this schedule on Wednesday, July 5. Let's play next Thursday as usual. Or whatever works, let me know.

Let's count on this and start letting people know via the blog or e-mail whether you will attend or not.

Take it easy and see you Sunday,

Jeff

Thursday pickup

at 7pm, CD East. BYOB.

19 June 2006

Hervorragend, meine Herren

Excellent work yesterday, boys. It feels good to have a point, and as several pointed out, to rise above Bye in the standings. The defense was outstanding, denying Carlisle significant chances, Gary and Steve ran the middle of the pitch, Sam, Jim and Marat really created some nice interplay up top. And in that weather. It goes without saying that having a mere two subs made all the difference.
Enjoy the world cup games and remember that we'll be up at CD East on Thursday at 7 to kick around.
Also, several people will not be able to make it this Sunday, including our keeper. If you can make it at all, even if it's for a half, please come out. And if you can bring someone along, please do.
Take it easy,
jc

Preparation for Sunday

Sunday is going to be 90 degrees and humid. Obviously our stamina will be stretched to the limit. We need as many of our teammates to show, even if it's for 20 minutes. Also, do yourselves a favor and load up on fluids the night before (the non alcoholic kind) and the morning of, have a good pasta dinner get some rest. Limit your exertion before the game. If you can, get to the Thursday evening kickaround, it's done wonders to build our passing game.

... and the Man

As the song to the 70's tv show says, 'Chico, don't be discouraged.' We did some good things today. Especially encouraging was our play up front. Very well done, fellas. I apologize for not covering enough ground today. That's not how I want to do it.
Now, I suppose relegation, if you can call it that, is a certainty. I say so what. It may be a blow to the ego, but we are building a team here, and it takes a couple of seasons to get things straight. We are improving, and that's the important thing. Once we gel, we're going to run the table. Let's keep playing together, because we're moving in the right direction.
Once again, we'll get together on Thursday at 7 at CD East.

Mike Labe - are you still having people over tomorrow? Can you give us directions to your place?

Hang in there guys,

Jeff

Pickup on Thursday

Just a reminder, 7pm, CD East MS. See you there.

That was a damn fine effort

I tell you, it was heartening to see the effort put in across the board today. We should all be proud and satisfied. We have three games left, and if we play like we did today and have a full squad, we should compete for the points. Personally, I had a tale of two halves, stank like a rat's ass in the first, moved to the middle and became suddenly comfortable. Interesting how that happened. How did you all experience the day? Gary lit the lamp well, Marat fought like I'd never seen him fight before.
Let's get together on Thursday again, at 7. See you then,
jc

30 May 2006

Numbers

No, not the overextended drama on cbs ("Them gangstas, they're using MATH!"), but an increase in our roster is the reference here.
Let's face it, we're hurting when it comes to numbers and I've heard several people mention that they would, put nicely, really like more players. Of course, we mean players that will help us win.
Now, some of us are newer to the area than others, some of us have lots of soccer contacts, and some of us don't. But we can all do something: poach players from other teams who aren't getting playing time, grab players from pickup, post signs at soccer facilities and on listservs. I think we'd be more than willing to let someone come out for a one game trial and see if they fit.
So, let's see if we can find 4 or 5 good players to help us out. We've got a month left to win some games.

Field Change

Sunday's game (May 21) versus Angelos is still at 3:00 but we are not playing at the CD East Middle School. Instead we will be playing at the CD East High School (Admin fields). If you are not familiar, the High School fields are in the same complex but just a few hundred yards away, up on the hill behind the fence/gate. So if you are facing our regular field that we play on from the parking lot, the field is to your left on the far side of the football practice field and softball field and baseball field).

10 May 2006

Pick-Up Games

Here are pick-up games in the area I know about: please feel free to add to the list.

Mon: Twin Ponds West, 9-11pm, $5 charge
Tues: In Carlisle w/ Carlisle team, 6pm, at the field we played at last month (Valley Meadows?)
Wed: in Hershey at the Hershey Med Center, 6pm-ish
Fri: Linglestown Middle School, 6.30 (an older crowd)
Sun: same as Friday but at 4.00 or so

Not as bad as we thought...

Thinking about yesterday's game, we actually had some very good moments. We talked about bringing the ball out of the back slowly, possessing the ball, and we did that for a while. We worked at coming back from midfield, and you guys in the back found us. I can recall a few occasions when the ball went back to Mike, who then kept it going across the field. We hadn't been able to do that before. We also had good team movement for a while. What broke down was fitness, and that's the easiest to fix. . Now we need to work at keeping the possession going past midfield and on our man-marking. What do you think about playing a flat four at the back? Something a little different. So, anyone feel like a bit of pickup? Tuesday? Thursday? I don't want to set up a permanent date yet, but seeing as we don't have a game Sunday, I thought we could manage a kickabout this week. Please post your interest up here. (Dil - can you send me an e-mail so I can send you another invitation to post here? That goes for anyone else not able to post). Keep your heads up, we are going to get there. jc

Next Game, Last Game

First and Foremost: the time for this week's game has been changed to 3pm. The location remains the same. We changed it so that we could be certain of having numbers. However, we will not have refs, so please take this into consideration when launching savage slide tackles. Also, Annville was very gracious to change the time, so I'd like to bring a case of beer to share with them after the game. Contributions will be welcome.
Now, as for last week's game: I wanted to say something, but couldn't until now without excessive use of various forms of the word 'motherfucker'. We all know that was an aberration, we can and will play much better. I'm not going to repeat anything - we know what we have to do. I will add that we need to stay focused, and be more aggressive all over the pitch. Don't be a sheep out there - be a wolf.
Bis spaeter,
jc

PS - great pic, sensei.
